An apple a day is just a rocking chair away!

Polio Recovery
Dr. Milton H. Erickson was born in 1901 and became the worlds leading creator and practitioner of hypnosis. At age seventeen he contracted polio and was told he would never walk again. Living in a rural area with little medical help available he decided to heal himself. Dr. H. Erickson started rocking (in a rocking chair). He discovered his ability to convert past memories (classic hypnotic phenomena) of muscular movement into extremely small motions while he sat in his rocking chair. As a means to reduce his pain, he recalled memories of becoming fatigued after exercise and vigorous activity and learned how to walk again. These experiences of observing, accessing and utilizing resource states would become the foundation of his pioneering work in the field of psychotherapy and hypnosis.

Autism & AD/HD
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Bruns Avenue Elementary received a donation of three large rocking chairs from Troutman Chair Company to help students with autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Lameka Smalls, a teacher for five years with the district, said the rocking chair in her classroom appears to be helping her autistic student.
“Since having the chair, my student has a place that is designated specifically for him to relax and classroom disruptions have diminished,” said Smalls. “I am beyond grateful to have received one of the rocking chairs because it seems to be making a difference. On behalf of the entire school, I want to thank Troutman Chair for its kind donation to support our students.” read full article

Back Trouble
In 1953, Dr. Janet Travell from New York purchased what she called her “Carolina Rocker” for her office from P. & P. Chair Company in North Carolina. A patient of Dr. Travell’s, a young senator from Massachusetts, suffered from chronic back trouble. She prescribed rocking in a rocking chair and he was most comfortable in the very chair in her office.

That Senator of course went on to become one of America’s most remembered presidents. By 1962, John F. Kennedy Jr. had acquired over 14 of the same rocking chairs and he literally had one wherever he went, even one on Air Force One! His belief in therapeutic benefits of rocking in a rocking chair, especially for chronic lower back pain, is probably the most famous of Rocking Chair Therapy testimonies. learn more(redirect to P. & P.
